It’s like delivered a messenger on a horse your message in 2013 instead of sending an email. Collecting phone numbers by asking can take a long time to build a database and it’s not very productive. The point of having a keyword(CLUB) and shortcode(77223) is to put it on your advertising, expose it to your club goers and make it easy for people to opt-in without having to ask for the number which can be a dubious task. The purpose of an online newsletter is to have people subscribe themselves, not ask everyone to sign up if they don’t want to. Having your club name as a keyword, as well, builds brand awareness and is consistent with your marketing efforts(and looks much nicer).
